My Haunted House: 2019 Edition

Come take a tour of my haunted abode this season! I always love to share photos of how I spooked my halls for the season to inspire you and your decorating. I have a fairly small house and not enough room sometimes to both store and display my ghoulish goodies but I try to do the best with the space I have.

My favorite addition this year is my Old Time Pottery Halloween Tree! I have always wanted to make a Halloween tree and they teamed up with me this year to make my Halloween decorating dream a reality. I could not have been more proud or excited about working with them and how it turned out.

DIY No Sew Toilet Paper Roll Pumpkins

I LOVE simple, easy and inexpensive Halloween crafts. When I saw these toilet paper fabric pumpkins sprouting up on Pinterest I knew I had to give them a try because it screamed simple, easy and inexpensive!

I also  am *sadly* not much of a sewer. I attempted to sew in the past in my high school home economics class which resulted in my teacher always having to re-do my work for me. Maybe some day I’ll try again, but for now I’ll enjoy the no sew lifestyle.

Is it simply too hot to go to the pumpkin patch? It sure is here in Oklahoma! Fear not Halloween friends, these pumpkins will not spoil in the heat and are MOSTLY all weather permitting. Enjoy pumpkins year-round and keep reading for steps to make the most durable gourd of all!

Ghoulish Halloween Rice Cereal Treats

I love making sweets! Especially Halloween inspired sweets!

Since it’s still too toasty outside to bake in the oven,  I chose to get in the Halloween spirit by making a sweet treat using the stove top instead.

The grocery store aisles are becoming fully stocked with Halloween candy and baking goods and I felt inspired to create something ghoulish…so I added a bit of Halloween magic to a basic rice cereal treat recipe to create ghoulish rice cereal treats instead.

Want to make a no fuss festive snack without turning the oven on? Keep on reading!

DIY Frankenstein Flower Pots

I love to fill my pots and planters around the front porch with mums as soon as they are in stock in the fall. Sometimes, this is a little premature because it’s still sweltering in Oklahoma in September and my poor little mums quickly turn into crunchy nuggets instead of feathery, bushy, fall delights.

To help pass the time so that I plant my mums at the right time, I’ve decided to create some cute Frankenstein pots to adorn my spooky porch. Last year my shared creation was my mesh Halloween wreath (I feel like I made three of them…) and this year I’ve decided to make a bunch of these jolly monsters for my mom, Grandma, and friends!

You truly do not need to be an expert painter to create a Frankenstein pot and you can make them however you want – he or she is your monster masterpiece!

If you’d like some inspiration on how to make one, keep on reading!

Pumpkin French Toast

It’s September 1st, which means it’s basically the beginning of FALL! It’s time to once again bake and make things as full of pumpkin spice as possible (except maybe SPAM which is just gross…). Let’s “toast” to the Halloween season!

I decided to welcome fall by whipping up an easy pumpkin french toast for breakfast.

Celebrate this extended holiday weekend by making some for yourself! Keep reading for the recipe.

Old Time Pottery Decorated Halloween Tree

I was absolutely ecstatic to have been asked to collaborate with Old Time Pottery (the store with more) on my very first Halloween tree! I’ve been a fan of this store for many years. It first opened when I was in high school and suddenly closed. Several years ago they opened up a new location in Tulsa, OK and I visit there probably several times a month (much more than I should). I almost always take my mom along with me (she’s my shopping partner in crime) because I value her opinion when I’m shopping for my home.

Old Time Pottery offers a wide variety of home goods at the most reasonable prices – plus, their seasonal selection is always unique and full of unexpected treasures. The first time I visited Old Time Pottery during this Halloween season (check out my shopping trip here), I fell in love with the giant Halloween ornaments that lined the shelves (yes, Halloween season officially begins in July now and I’m totally OK with that!).

I’ve been yearning to create a Halloween tree for quite some time, and afterseeing those ornaments I was immediately inspired to deck my tree with gholish baubles from Old Time Pottery!

The True Tale of Elmer McCurdy: My Family’s Ghost Story

The bizarre yet true tale of one of my ancestors, Elmer McCurdy, is an example of when the dead don’t die (cue Sturgill Simpson now).

My dad shared with me that all McCurdy’s in the U.S. were descended from the same Scottish family that came here many years ago – therefore we claim Elmer McCurdy as a long lost uncle. He is notably the most famous family member I have, but famous for the wrong reasons.

What makes his story so bizarre is that he was not laid to rest until 66 years after his death.  He had just as much of an interesting life after death as he had during his life. He’s the outlaw that just wouldn’t give up and still haunted the living…

A Voyage to Spirit Halloween

Ahoy, spooky shoppers! The telltale sign that Halloween season has officially arrived at the harbor is when Spirit Halloween stores officially open!

Nothing is creepier than visiting the building where an abandoned Toys”R”Us or Sears retailer once thrived to find that they have been usurped by demonic animatronic creatures, walls of masks and costumes, and orange and black everything.

I made it a point to visit the first Spirit Halloween of the season on Friday, Aug. 9 (only ONE day after it just opened) on 71st Street in Tulsa, OK.

I always get a kick out of their displays and was giddy with Halloween glee to find that this location was well stocked and all of their frightening displays were working without a hitch. Keep reading to see some of the sights you can expect at Spirit Halloween stores in 2019!
