DIY No Sew Patchwork Pumpkin Sweatshirt

It’s never too soon to get prepared for chilly autumn evenings in an adorable custom designed sweatshirt!

I have always wanted to sew my own clothes with mismatched fabric and mixed media prints, but while I slowly learn a new hobby – I found an easy way that didn’t require sewing to get a similar effect using iron-on adhesive and scrap fabric.

Wanna try it out with me? Keep reading!

I belong to a “Buy Nothing” group on Facebook and was generously gifted a large amount of gorgeous brightly colored scrap fabric to begin my sewing journey but also worked great for my no-sew pumpkin sweatshirt design. If you want to do this project At little to no cost, be sure to ask around your social networks and friends and family for leftover fabric.

I purchased iron-on adhesive for appliqués from Hobby Lobby in the sewing section. They come in sheets and rolls, and I opted to buy the roll because it had more material which I may use for future projects.

I wanted to specifically create a “pieced together” pumpkin look so I searched the internet for a shape I could use as a template for cutting my fabric pieces. I used my Cricut to cut the image on card stock but this step is optional. If you’re steady with drawing, go ahead and free hand it!

Once I had my template ready, I chose the fabric I wanted to use in each pumpkin section. I made sure I cut rectangles of fabric pieces and adhesive out that matched so that I could iron on the first layer of backing before I cut out the actual pumpkin pieces. Be sure to iron on the adhesive with the paper side on your hot iron and the rough plastic side on your fabric rectangle/square.

Once the adhesive is secured to the fabric using a hot iron, the pieces should feel a little stiff. Now you can cut your patches/segments out as desired:

Once I ironed on my fabric pieces to build the most darling little pumpkin, I decided it also needed a jolly Jack-o-lantern face! Once the first layer of adhesive cooled, I ironed on the face last (which I dis freehand)!

The sweatshirt I nabbed was $5 from Walmart too so I stocked up and got another one incase I’m inspired to do a patchwork ghost sweater next. At that price, you can get crafty all season long and the possibilities are endless!!!

I hope you enjoyed this little craft and I hope you decide to make one too!

Stay spooky,

Callie Jo
