Upcycled Halloween Planters

This past spring, I decided to put lots of beautiful planted flowers in old paint cans I recycled and decorated from my garage, which then of course inspired me to create a wonderland land of hand painted Halloween planters for the fall.

I decided to get started painting my goulish containers now so that I will have an abundance of pots for mums when the time comes to plant them ( because it is too darn hot to plant them in this Oklahoma summer heat).

The great thing about upcycling planters from containers is that you could also use smaller containers for indoor plants or herbs to decorate with and display now! I recommend using tin cans, paint cans, yogurt containers, etc.

I plan to make several of these planters and save multiple containers to paint throughout the summer! Be sure if you will be using them to plant your plants in to drill drainage holes in the side or bottom.

I wanted to make some cute little pumpkin faces and candy corn characters which go well with my colorful outdoor display in the fall (my kids love all the whimsical and bright colors so I’m sticking with that aesthetic for a bit).

I used acrylic paint to decorate the containers, and they can be sealed with a mod podge spray to last all season.

These can easily be candy holders, or store supplies and utensils for a Halloween party, or even could hold artificial flowers for a super low maintenance garden!

I’ve that these take minimal effort (which is a huge crafting win for me because with two toddlers, I don’t have a ton of time to devote to a lengthy project). Plus, it’s made with stuff that would otherwise be recycled or thrown out. Now it’s a bit of spooky treasure!

I hope you’ll feel inspired to make a little hack-o-lantern pot for your home or garden to celebrate spooky season with me!

Stay spooky,

Callie Jo
